# Waycar > Waycar is a native iPhone and iPad app for checking on and talking to the coding agents you run in herdr or tmux on your own machines. Agent terminals run over mosh, so they survive network changes and fall back to SSH when mosh can't connect. No account required. **Key facts** - Waycar is a native iPhone and iPad app for herdr and tmux. It connects to computers the user controls, called Hosts, over SSH or mosh, and shows the Agents running there. - Platforms: iPhone and iPad, iOS / iPadOS 18 or later. Every screen is native SwiftUI. - App Store availability: coming soon to the App Store. - Pricing: Free has 10 Launches in any rolling 30 days. A Launch is starting a new Agent or Shell from Waycar, resuming a closed Agent, or starting an Agent by typing its command in a Waycar Shell. Opening, watching, reading, or prompting sessions that are already running never counts; neither do Agents started at the desk, Launches that fail, or Launches made while on Pro. Waycar Pro removes the limit for $5 a month or $40 a year in the US (yearly is 4 months free compared with paying monthly), renews automatically until cancelled in the Apple Account's subscription settings, and is paid through Apple. Every feature is in both Free and Pro. There is no trial. Family Sharing is not available, so each Apple Account needs its own Waycar Pro. - Works with herdr (0.7.5 or later) and tmux (3.2 or later), or both on one Host. The same install command works for herdr, tmux, or both. - Supported agents (17): claude, codex, omp, gemini, opencode, pi, Amp, Cline, Cursor Agent, Devin CLI, Droid, GitHub Copilot CLI, Kilo Code, Kimi CLI, Kiro CLI, Qoder CLI, Qwen Code. Chat Mode works with Claude Code, Codex, omp, pi and opencode. - Host requirements: a Mac or Linux computer the user controls, with OpenSSH (stock config), herdr ≥ 0.7.5 or tmux ≥ 3.2, Node ≥ 20 on the Host (for the install command and Waycar's tools), OpenSSH with streamlocal on for herdr, Remote Login on for macOS, and mosh-server plus open UDP for mosh. - Install command on the Host: `curl -fsSL https://waycar.dev/install.sh | sh` — it finds herdr or tmux, sets up Waycar, and offers to show a pairing QR (answer Y). Run it again to pair another device or to update Waycar, e.g. for Chat Mode. - Connection and transport: plain SSH straight to the machine, with live agent terminals over mosh. mosh survives network changes, catches up after dead zones by showing the live screen, and Waycar falls back to SSH on its own when mosh can't connect; a MOSH or SSH badge shows which is in use. A Jump Host reaches machines not on the open internet, with host keys checked at both hops. - Privacy and data handling: no account, no ads, no cross-app tracking. SSH keys are made on device and the private half never leaves the Keychain. Sessions go over SSH straight to the machine. Notifications are encrypted on the Host before they leave it. Usage analytics are optional and pseudonymous. AI Summaries are optional and, if turned on, send recent screen text from the Host to its AI provider. iCloud Sync of Hosts and keys is end-to-end encrypted and optional. Dictation runs on device. - Contact: support@waycar.dev for support, privacy@waycar.dev for privacy questions or data requests. Community: r/waycar on Reddit. - Waycar is an independent app from OTREVA, LLC. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the herdr project, CodexBar, Anthropic, OpenAI or Google. **Features** - **mosh + SSH**: Agent terminals run over mosh, so switching networks doesn't drop them; after a dead zone the phone jumps straight to the live screen. Waycar falls back to SSH on its own when mosh can't get through, and a MOSH or SSH badge shows which transport is in use. Needs mosh-server and open UDP on the Host; tap Test Mosh to check. - **Agent console**: The Console lists agents from all Hosts in one place, sorted by status so blocked ones come first (Blocked → Done → Working → Idle). Filter by Host, search by folder or title, or long-press to pin an agent. - **Terminal**: A real, native terminal built on Ghostty's engine. Full-screen apps look right, scrolling has momentum, long-press selects text, and a button jumps to the start or back to live output. - **Prompting**: The Composer is a local draft, so messages can be edited before sending. On-device dictation (iOS 26), snippets and agent Skills drop in without sending anything. - **Workspaces and worktrees**: Turn on New Worktree and an agent gets a fresh git checkout on its own branch, or start a Workspace in any folder on the Host. - **Pairing**: Pair a machine with one QR. Keys are ed25519, made on-device, and the Pairing Code pins the host key, so there is no blind trust prompt. The Hosts sheet shows live CPU, memory and swap gauges. - **iPad**: A first-class iPad app with the Console in a sidebar next to the live terminal, Stage Manager, Take Over Here, drag and drop, and keyboard shortcuts (⌘1–9 agents, ⌘[ ⌘] switch, ⌘F search, ⌘N new agent, ⌘E input mode, ⌘↩ send). - **Notifications and Live Activities**: Encrypted pushes for Blocked and Done, encrypted on the Host so the push relay can't read them. A Live Activity for each Host keeps counts on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. - **Chat Mode**: Talk to Claude Code, Codex, omp, pi or opencode as a simple chat instead of a terminal. Replies appear in notifications (herdr only, for now), permission prompts can be answered with Allow or Cancel in the chat, and images and videos appear above the reply. Touch and hold the Waycar icon and tap New Chat to start a chat from the Home Screen. - **AI Usage via CodexBar**: With CodexBar on a Host, the Console shows an AI Usage row with the provider closest to its limit, plus session and weekly gauges, pace lines, and reset times for every provider. Waycar reads it over SSH every few minutes while the app is open, and it can be turned on or off per Host. - **Closed Sessions**: When an agent exits or its tab closes, Waycar keeps it for 30 days. Tap Closed, then tap the agent to reopen it in a new tab in the same folder; most agents resume the same chat. With iCloud Sync, closed agents show up on both iPhone and iPad. - **tmux support**: Waycar works with tmux 3.2 or later with the same install command. Status hooks tell Waycar when Claude Code, Codex, omp, pi and opencode agents are working, blocked or done. Run both herdr and tmux and their agents show up in one list. - **Preview bar and attachments**: Images, PDFs, Markdown files and links the agent prints collect in one preview bar under the terminal. Send photos or files to the Host, up to 64 MB, and their paths land in the draft. - **Controls**: The Toolbar under every agent sends Esc, Tab, ⇧Tab, arrows, Ctrl, alt and F-keys straight to it, or tap the keyboard button to type right into the terminal. Keys can be chosen and ordered in Settings. - **Appearance**: 30 terminal themes, one for light mode and one for dark. JetBrains Mono and IBM Plex Mono come built in, with pinch to zoom. Settings sync via end-to-end encrypted iCloud Keychain. - **Agents**: Waycar finds the agent tools on each Host and starts them from the New Agent sheet. Plain shells show up in the Console too. - **CarPlay**: On iOS 26.4 or later, agents appear on the car's screen sorted by who needs the user, with spoken answers and nothing agent-written on screen. Claude Code or Codex approvals can be allowed or denied by voice; risky or long ones wait. - **Dictation**: On iOS 26 or later, speech becomes text on the device with Apple's built-in speech model. Audio is never saved or sent anywhere, not even to the Host, until the message is sent. - **Security**: On-device keys, pinned host key fingerprints, host keys checked at both Jump Host hops, post-quantum key exchange when the server supports it, on-device dictation, and end-to-end encrypted iCloud Keychain sync. **herdr vs tmux** | Feature | herdr | tmux | | --- | --- | --- | | Agent list | Workspaces, tabs and panes | Sessions, windows and panes | | Agent status | Every agent herdr knows | Claude Code, Codex, omp, pi and opencode, via Waycar hooks | | Alerts and Live Activities | Yes | Via Waycar hooks | | Chat Mode replies in alerts | Yes | Not yet | | Everything else | Yes | Yes, a few parts via Waycar hooks | **Setup** 1. Get Waycar. It is coming soon to the App Store. 2. Install Waycar on the Mac or Linux Host. It works with herdr, tmux, or both. Run `curl -fsSL https://waycar.dev/install.sh | sh` and answer Y to show a pairing QR. 3. Scan the code in Waycar. Say yes to show a QR, then scan it in Waycar. Run it again to pair another device. Requirements: iOS / iPadOS 18+, herdr ≥ 0.7.5 or tmux ≥ 3.2, Node ≥ 20 on the Host, OpenSSH with streamlocal on for herdr, macOS Remote Login on, and mosh-server plus UDP for mosh. Alternative without installing: tap Add Manually in Waycar, enter the Host's Address, Port (usually 22) and User, choose Password or Device Key authentication (for Device Key, copy the line Waycar shows and add it to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the Host), tap Save, check the fingerprint and tap Trust. **FAQ** - **How do I get Waycar?** It's coming soon to the App Store. Then run the install command on each machine, or add one by hand. - **What does Waycar cost?** Free for 10 Launches (new agents or shells, and resumed agents) every 30 days. Watching running agents never counts. Waycar Pro removes the limit for $5 a month or $40 a year in the US, and renews until cancelled in the Apple Account. - **Do I need herdr?** No. tmux 3.2 or later works too. - **Which agents work in Chat Mode?** Claude Code, Codex, omp, pi and opencode. Run the install command again first. On herdr, opencode also needs herdr integration install opencode. - **Does anything go through the cloud?** Not the sessions: they go over SSH straight to the machine. Push notifications and usage analytics are optional. AI Summaries, if turned on, send recent screen text to the AI provider. - **My machine isn't reachable from the internet. Can I still use it?** Yes. Put an SSH Jump Host in front of it. - **Is Waycar affiliated with herdr or the AI companies?** No. Waycar is an independent app from OTREVA, LLC. **Troubleshooting** - **"Trust this Host?", "The host key is not trusted", or "The host key changed"**: Waycar pins each Host's SSH host key on first connect; check the fingerprint with ssh-keygen on the Host. For "not trusted", open the Host's page and answer Trust this Host?. For "host key changed" without a reinstall, do not trust the new key; if the Host was reinstalled, choose Trust New Key. - **"herdr is not running on this Host"**: Start herdr on the Host, and check that SSH stream-local forwarding is allowed: AllowStreamLocalForwarding must not be no and DisableForwarding must not be yes in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, and the authorized_keys line must not contain restrict or no-port-forwarding. Restart SSH after a change. - **"herdr is not on this Host's SSH PATH"**: SSH commands do not load the full shell profile. Make sure the Homebrew folder (/opt/homebrew/bin on Apple silicon Mac, /home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew/bin on Linux) is on the PATH for non-interactive SSH sessions. - **"tmux is not installed on this Host"**: Install tmux 3.2 or later, or herdr, on the Host. - **"tmux is too old"**: Waycar needs tmux 3.2 or later. Update tmux on the Host. If the Host also runs herdr, the install command ignores the old tmux and sets up herdr; without herdr it stops. - **tmux isn't running on the Host**: tmux has no sessions yet. Tap Start Session in the Console, or start one on the Host. - **Agents show Unknown on tmux**: The status hooks cover Claude Code, Codex, omp, pi and opencode, but only if they were installed before the install command ran; run it again, or use Install Status Hooks on the Host's page. Codex also needs a one-time review on its /hooks screen. Most other agents show Unknown. - **One backend shows an issue on a Host with herdr and tmux**: Waycar shows the failing backend's issue with a Retry button while the other keeps working. Turn off Show tmux sessions on the Host's page to hide the tmux sessions and stop their notifications. - **"Authentication failed"**: Password sign-in uses SSH password authentication. If the Host only allows keys or keyboard-interactive sign-in, choose Device Key and add its line to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. - **Mosh does not connect**: Mosh is optional; Waycar uses SSH instead when it fails. Install mosh-server on the Host (brew install mosh or sudo apt install mosh), allow incoming UDP ports 60000 to 61000, then edit the Host and tap Test Mosh on this Host. - **IPv6-only networks**: Waycar works there with a DNS name or an IP address; type IPv6 addresses without square brackets. - **Pairing Code: "The Host has no pairing in progress for this code"**: The code expired or was already used. Run the install command again, or show a new Pairing Code in herdr; on tmux, run the pair command the install command printed. Then scan the new code. - **The computer is not reachable from the internet**: Add a Jump Host that can reach the machine, in the Host's Jump Host section. Waycar checks host keys at both hops. ## Docs - [Waycar product guide](https://waycar.dev/index.md): The full product page as Markdown: mosh + SSH, Chat Mode, CarPlay, AI Usage, Closed Sessions, tmux, how it works, every feature, setup steps, and the FAQ. - [Waycar Help](https://waycar.dev/help): The help center index, with one page per feature covering setup, the Console, agents, the terminal, Hosts and connections, notifications, iPad and CarPlay, settings, and troubleshooting. - [Pricing](https://waycar.dev/pricing): The Free and Pro plans, what counts as a Launch, what never counts, what happens at the limit, syncing, and how to cancel. - [Support](https://waycar.dev/support): Contact details, requirements, setup steps including Scan to Pair and Add Manually, Waycar Pro and billing answers, and fixes for common problems. - [Privacy policy](https://waycar.dev/privacy): What Waycar keeps on the device, iCloud Sync, purchases, AI Summaries, Waycar's tools on the Host, notifications and the push relay, analytics, and the user's choices and rights. - [iPad gallery](https://waycar.dev/ipad): Screens and descriptions of Waycar on iPad: the sidebar console, full-width terminal, New Agent sheet, and Hosts sheet. ## Help - [Waycar Help index](https://waycar.dev/help.md): The help center as Markdown, one page per feature, with each link pointing to the page's Markdown version. - [What is Waycar?](https://waycar.dev/help/what-is-waycar.md): Waycar is a native iPhone and iPad app for checking on and talking to the coding agents run in herdr or tmux on the user's own machines. - [Requirements](https://waycar.dev/help/requirements.md): What the iPhone or iPad and the Host need for Waycar, from iOS 18 to herdr 0.7.5 or tmux 3.2, Node 20, OpenSSH and optional mosh. - [Install Waycar on your Host](https://waycar.dev/help/install.md): One command on a Mac or Linux machine finds herdr or tmux, installs the Waycar host tools, and offers to show a Pairing Code. - [Pair with a Pairing Code](https://waycar.dev/help/pairing.md): Scan or paste the Pairing Code the Host shows to add it to Waycar, with the key made on the device and the host key already pinned. - [Add a Host by hand](https://waycar.dev/help/add-host-manually.md): Add a Host without a Pairing Code by typing its address, port and user, then choosing a Device Key, RSA Key or password to sign in. - [Set up a Mac as a Host](https://waycar.dev/help/mac-host.md): Turn on Remote Login, install herdr or tmux and Node 20, then run the Waycar install command to use a Mac as a Waycar Host. - [Set up a Linux Host](https://waycar.dev/help/linux-host.md): Install the OpenSSH server, herdr or tmux 3.2, and Node 20 on a Linux machine, then run the Waycar install command and pair. - [Update Waycar on your Host](https://waycar.dev/help/update-host-tools.md): Run the install command again to update the Waycar plugin and host tools on a Host, add hooks for new agents, and pair another device. - [Remove Waycar from a Host](https://waycar.dev/help/remove-host-tools.md): Uninstall the Waycar host tools from a Mac or Linux Host, remove its Status Hooks and SSH key, and delete the Host in the app. - [The Console](https://waycar.dev/help/console.md): The Console lists the agents and shells on all Hosts in one place, sorted so the ones that need attention come first. - [Agent status](https://waycar.dev/help/agent-status.md): What Blocked, Done, Working, Idle, and Unknown mean on an agent card, and how status decides the Console's order. - [Filter, search, and pin](https://waycar.dev/help/filter-search-pin.md): Narrow the Console with Status pills, the Host and Workspace menus, and search, and pin agents to the top. - [Agent card fields](https://waycar.dev/help/agent-card-fields.md): Choose which fields each Host's agent cards show in the Console, in up to three rows, from Settings › Agent List Fields. - [Rename, close, and mark agents](https://waycar.dev/help/manage-agents.md): Close, rename, move, pin, and mark agents from the Console, one at a time or several at once with Select. - [Closed Sessions](https://waycar.dev/help/closed-sessions.md): When an agent exits or its tab closes, Waycar keeps it for 30 days so the same session can be resumed with one tap. - [Shells and busy shells](https://waycar.dev/help/shells.md): Plain shells show up in the Console as cards like agents, and a busy shell shows Running and the command it's running. - [Workspaces](https://waycar.dev/help/workspaces.md): A Workspace groups the tabs on a Host, like a herdr workspace or a tmux session. It is entirely optional.
